As the warm California spring begins to unfold across the San Gabriel Valley, VBS Healing Services is proud to announce the launch of several new wellness programs at our West Covina treatment center. These expanded offerings represent our ongoing commitment to providing holistic, whole-person care that extends beyond traditional clinical treatment to embrace the full spectrum of healing modalities available to individuals in recovery from substance use disorders.
Our clinical leadership team has spent the past several months researching evidence-based complementary therapies, gathering feedback from current and former patients, and consulting with wellness practitioners throughout California. The result is a thoughtfully designed collection of spring programming that enhances our existing treatment framework while offering patients new avenues for personal growth, self-expression, and physical well-being.
Yoga Therapy Program
Beginning this spring, VBS Healing Services will offer structured yoga therapy sessions three times per week, led by a certified yoga therapist with specialized training in addiction recovery. Unlike general fitness yoga classes, yoga therapy is a clinical modality that uses the principles and practices of yoga to address specific physical, emotional, and psychological challenges associated with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions.
Research published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment has demonstrated that yoga therapy can reduce cravings, decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve sleep quality, and enhance overall emotional regulation in individuals recovering from addiction. For patients at our West Covina facility, these sessions will provide a physical practice that builds body awareness, reduces stress, and creates a direct connection between breath, movement, and emotional state.
Sessions will be adapted to accommodate all fitness levels and physical abilities, ensuring that every patient can participate comfortably. Our yoga therapy program will be integrated into individualized treatment plans so that the benefits of the practice complement and reinforce the work being done in individual and group therapy sessions. West Covina patients will have the opportunity to develop a personal yoga practice that they can continue as part of their aftercare routine long after leaving our facility.
Guided Art Therapy Sessions
Art therapy is a well-established expressive therapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. At VBS Healing Services, our new guided art therapy sessions will be facilitated by a licensed art therapist who specializes in working with individuals recovering from addiction to alcohol, opioids, heroin, fentanyl, prescription drugs, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
For many individuals in recovery, traditional talk therapy can feel limiting. Some emotions, memories, and experiences are difficult to articulate in words, and the creative process provides an alternative pathway for exploration and expression. Art therapy does not require any previous artistic skill or experience. The focus is on the process of creation rather than the final product, making it accessible and meaningful for every patient regardless of their background.
Our guided sessions will include a variety of mediums, from drawing and painting to collage, sculpture, and mixed media. Each session is designed around a therapeutic theme that connects to the broader goals of addiction treatment, such as exploring identity, processing grief and loss, visualizing a sober future, or expressing gratitude. These themes align with the therapeutic work happening across our West Covina program, creating a cohesive treatment experience that engages the whole person.
Outdoor Meditation and Mindfulness Groups
Taking advantage of the beautiful Southern California spring weather, VBS Healing Services will launch outdoor meditation and mindfulness groups that meet twice weekly on our West Covina campus grounds. These sessions will be led by trained mindfulness facilitators and will introduce patients to a variety of meditation techniques, including guided visualization, body scan meditation, loving-kindness meditation, and walking meditation.
Mindfulness-based interventions have accumulated substantial evidence supporting their effectiveness in addiction treatment. A meta-analysis published in Clinical Psychology Review found that mindfulness practices significantly reduce substance use, craving, and stress while improving psychological well-being. By offering these sessions outdoors, we aim to enhance the therapeutic experience through connection with nature, fresh air, and the calming effect of green spaces.
West Covina is home to several beautiful natural areas, and our campus offers a peaceful outdoor setting that is ideal for reflective practice. Patients will learn techniques that they can use independently whenever they experience cravings, anxiety, or emotional distress. Building a personal meditation practice during treatment gives individuals a powerful, portable coping tool that supports their recovery for years to come.
Nutrition and Wellness Workshops
Complementing these new programs, VBS Healing Services is also introducing biweekly nutrition and wellness workshops. These interactive sessions, led by a registered dietitian with experience in addiction recovery, will cover topics such as meal planning for sobriety, understanding the gut-brain connection, managing sugar cravings in early recovery, and using nutrition as a tool for mood regulation.
Many patients entering treatment at our West Covina facility have experienced significant nutritional deficiencies as a result of prolonged substance use. Alcohol depletes B vitamins and disrupts liver function. Stimulants suppress appetite and lead to severe weight loss. Opioids often cause gastrointestinal dysfunction. Our wellness workshops will provide practical, actionable guidance that helps patients restore their physical health and develop sustainable eating habits that support long-term recovery.
